Story Telling with cards and the Story Catcher App:
Steve Walton will be leading us in story telling using our wonderful new story cards and we can even practice with the Story Catcher App.
Older But Still Getting Wiser (OBSGW)
Our Older but Still Getting Wiser series (OBSGW) is a little different this time. We are introducing some panel discussions so you can hear from a variety of people on important topics. We are also introducing some new topics that include all of the things each of us wants (or needs) to know as we age. Here are some examples of what is included:
Robin Andrews Smith is bringing her Dementia Friends workshop from the Georgia Dementia Friendly Initiative.
Is it all in order? This session will talk about legal and financial decisions that are important to all of us as we age. Ask the lawyer and the investment advisor.
Senior Living Communities around us: There are many new communities growing up around Atlanta. Hear from the new and the established about what’s changing.
Leaving this earth: Hospice, organ donation, cremation and the things we avoid talking about.
Building your village: What will be your support network as you age?
What’s new in transportation: ways to keep moving around Atlanta as you age.
People living deeply have no fear of death. Anais Nin
Zandra Matthews will be leading this session. DeathCafe offers a creative way to explore how death can inform and inspire the way we live.
Tai Chi – Tina Rasheed
Our own Tina Rasheed will again be leading us in Tai Chi. Tina has a 26-year career as a public health researcher at the Morehouse School of Medicine and has applied her mission as a martial artist to bridge the health disparity gap by teaching self-applied health enhancement techniques such as Qigong and Tai Chi as a strategy to promote health and prevent disease. Tai Chi is a gentle exercise program that is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Derived from the martial arts, Tai Chi is composed of slow, deliberate movements composed of mental focus, deep breathing, and stretching which enhance physical health and emotional well-being.
GROW AND READ
We are trying a new concept this session and combining our love for gardening, dirt and growing things with our enjoyment of literature and learning. This workshop will bring you great literature to enjoy and combine it with information about gardening and gardens. Get ready to read and get your hands dirty.
One week of the session we will be hearing from the authors of Seeking Eden: A collection of Georgia’s Historic Gardens. The authors are from the Atlanta History Center and they will be talking about the gardens and the book. See more information here.
Line Dancing – Rose Haven
Our own Rose Haven will be bringing us line dancing again in the Spring. Rose Haven has been a line dance instructor since 1992. Rose is the founder and director of two award winning competition dance teams. Rose brings all that line dancing expertise to her Lifespan low-impact, low-risk line dancing class. Enjoy the music and the moves.
Ukulele
The Ukulele Group is GROWING!! We have several people who have decided to join the ukulele group and soon we will be a band. It was great to have everyone enjoy the mini concert our ukulele players provided for us last session. We can’t wait to hear what they sound like with even more of them.
Come and join us this session. NO MUSICAL TRAINING REQUIRED, BUT LOTS OF FUN TO BE HAD! Just get yourself a soprano ukulele and a gig bag and bring it on in. You will also want to pick up an electronic tuner to keep it in tune. Finally, get The Daily Ukulele Book, by Liz and Jim Beloff – also called the “Yellow Book.”
Our own Peggy Palmiter will be teaching about both the iPhone and the iPad. Bring your device and learn how to tame the beast. Several of our students from this session want to return and we welcome any additional folks who want to join in.
This class is organized based on the things you really want to know about your device. We take questions and topics from the students and then we integrate those questions into the various skills that you learn. There are also online resources that are made available for you during and after the class.
I Remember – Rosemary Glenn
The I Remember group has decided to meet in the afternoon for two or three times this Fall Session. It keeps all of the members working on their writing, helping each other and talking about their stories. But it also allows them to attend some of the morning sessions that they find interesting. They will be meeting at 1:30 pm on April 18th, May 2nd and May 16th
