About the Lifespan Intergenerational Program

Program Details

  • 8-week sessions consisting of 3-4 students and 6-8 older adults.
Program Director initially meets with students and older adults separately to explain program details, answer questions and coordinate schedules.
  • Offered 4 times a year
  • Program Director facilitates introductions and provides separate sample questions/conversation starters for both students and older adults.
  • Lifespan provides Zoom accounts for all meetings.
Part 1: One Kickoff session and Small Groups (Weeks 1-4)
  • An initial Kickoff session allows for participant introductions, a few fun icebreakers, the program format/expectations, and Q&A.
  • Two students participate in two separate Small Groups, each containing two older adults, for a ratio of approx. 2-3 students + approx. 2-3 older adults
  • Frequency: Weekly
  • Duration: approximately 60 minutes per Zoom session.
Part 2: Community Group with themed topics (Weeks 5-8)
  • The program director/facilitator and the small group participants merge back into one large community group for the remaining 4 weeks.
  • Discussion: “Small Group Icebreakers + Topic(s) of the Week” is selected by each small group assigned to its respective week. Example topics include, current events, life story themes, hobbies, jobs, technology, comparisons of how times have changed between generations, etc.
  • Frequency: Weekly
  • Duration: approximately 60-75 minutes per Zoom session.

Each week I looked forward to joining an intelligent, supportive group open to discussions on a variety of interesting topics.

Why Intergenerational Connections Matter

Lifespan Resources is an Atlanta-based nonprofit founded in 1981 with a mission of creating communities where older adults can prosper, both socially and cognitively. Lifespan’s current program, Lifespan IG (Intergenerational) expands upon this mission by pairing college students with older adults aging in place at home – to Connect, Laugh and Learn together in virtual intergenerational communities!
